CLASSES

All our classes are designed to not only challenge you physically, but help you grow mentally, too.

Regardless of age, martial arts training can help with self-discipline and in children can serve as an outlet for the emotions and anxieties that can often lead to behavioural problems.

Adult Classes

Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, which translates as ‘The art of hand and foot’ - and that’s exactly what it is! Formed from Karate and Korean kickboxing, it’s known for its flamboyant kicks. Taekwondo helps develop flexibility and has a number of additional physical and mental health benefits.

Aspects you can choose to focus on include sparring, patterns, board breaking and techniques.

Kickboxing

Our kickboxing classes cover techniques from many forms of kickboxing including K1, Muay Thai and, of course, Taekwondo. The classes are less formal than Taekwondo, and are sport and fitness orientated. We’ve a wide range of students, both male and female. Some attend for fitness and to get a challenging workout, others look to the competitive side. Sparring in class is optional!

Teenagers aged 11-13 years are welcome to join the adult class, depending on their experience.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a physically demanding martial art which focuses on grappling and floor-work. What makes it especially interesting is that it relies on more than sheer physical strength – so gives as much of a mental challenge as a physical work-out. We run Gi and No Gi sessions for adults, which can be attended by teenagers 13+ depending on ability.

Kids Classes

Little Dragons Mini Martial Arts
(3-5 years/Pre-school)

Little Dragons is an introduction to structured group activity for children. Although we focus on martial arts, these sessions can form a foundation for many other sports.

We believe it’s important at this age to put the main focus on fun. We use games and fun activities, and introduce the basics of martial arts though drills involving kicking and punching pads. There is no physical contact in this class, and when teaching combat we talk about super heroes and villains.

Junior Taekwondo
(6+ years)

In our Junior Taekwondo classes, we put the emphasis on fun. At this age, we teach the fundamentals and sparring through games and fun drills.

Kids start to learn discipline, independence and responsibilty - sometimes without even realising it! Our junior grading system helps them discover a sense of achievement through setting goals and working towards them, with the reward of a new belt for their effort.

My daughter Izzy has been going to Taekwondo for nearly two years and she absolutely loves it. Her self confidence has really grown and she’s learned that hard work and practice pays off when she has earned a new belt.

I have been going to the kickboxing class for over a year. As a complete novice I was made to feel so welcome, and quickly felt part of the SMMA community. I love the challenge, the camaraderie and it is the highlight of my week!

I joined the club in 2017, and undoubtedly, it was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Mr Mclaren is a great and respected teacher with a very good sense of humour. I achieved my black belt back this year, and it was the most sensational feeling. I highly recommend Taekwondo to everyone regardless of your age or gender.
