Blue Tag – Promotion to Blue Belt

Fundamental Exercises

  • Pattern (Tul): Yul-Gok (38 moves)

Theory 

  • The Blue Belt signifies Heaven, towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Taekwondo progresses.

  • Yul-Gok is the pseudonym of a great philosopher and scholar, Yi I (1536-1584).

  • Yi I was nick-named the “Confucius of Korea”.

  • The 38 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on the 38º latitude.

  • The diagram represents “scholar”. 

Techniques 

Blocking

  • Walking Stance Palm Hooking Block

  • Walking Stance High Double Forearm Block

Striking

  • X-Stance High Backfist Side Strike

Kicking

  • Pressing Kick

  • Reverse Turning Kick

  • Back Piercing Kick

  • Power – Side Piercing Kick (both feet, measure & break)

Combined

  • Walking Stance Palm Hooking Block – Hooking Block

  • Bending Ready Stance – Side kick – Walking Stance Front Elbow Strike

  • Turning Kick – Reverse Turning Kick

2-Step Sparring

Attack > Defence > Counter

  • Side Kick/Knifehand > Guarding/Outward Block > Punch

  • Side Punch/Snap Kick > Double/Upward Block > Upset Punch

  • Turning Kick > Double Wedging Block > Knee
